How to get to Villa de Leyva?

Villa de Leyva is located in the department of Boyacá, 177 km north of Bogotá, Colombia, in South America.

To reach this National Monument there are four main routes:

  1. Autopista Norte de Bogotá – Puente de Boyacá – Samacá – Villa de Leyva (2 hours and 15 minutes).
  2. Autopista Norte de Bogotá – Tunja – Cucaita – Villa de Leyva (2 hours and 50 minutes).
  3. Autopista Norte de Bogotá – Tunja – Arcabuco – Villa de Leyva (3 hours and 15 minutes).
  4. Bogotá – Zipaquirá – Ubaté – Chiquinquirá – Villa de Leyva North Highway (3 hours).

Via Tunja

Leaving via the North Highway, this is the fastest route, as approximately 70% of the route is a dual carriageway.

One option is to turn off after the Boyacá Bridge (before reaching Tunja) and take the road to Samacá. This route reduces the journey by about 25 km and saves around 25 minutes. Furthermore, the road is in excellent condition.

Another alternative is to go to Tunja. At the first traffic light, turn left and follow the signs for the Tunja–Chiquinquirá highway. The entire 177 km route is completely paved.

Tolls: Including the one on the Autopista Norte, there are 4 tolls on the way there and 3 on the way back.

Via Chiquinquirá

From the Autopista Norte you can take the Chía – Cajicá – Zipaquirá route, or the Briceño – Zipaquirá route. From there, continue towards Chiquinquirá and then take the road towards Tunja.

This route is 188 km long. Although it is longer than the road through Tunja, it usually has less traffic.

Tolls: Including the one on the Autopista Norte, there are 2 tolls going there and 1 returning.
